Recently, Flying Dog has a couple of big changes! First, they got a new brewmaster when Ben Clark stepped into the shoes of Flying Dog COO Matt Brophy last year. He is credited with being a major part of the brewery’s Brewhouse Rarities program – a huge part of the brewery’s continued push for creativity and innovation, plus recipes for Dead Rise, Summer Rental, and other great new additions to the brewery’s lineup. The other thing is that they have taken over a year and a half to reformulate their iconic Snake Dog IPA! Brewing with a recipe that was 20-years old, it was a really old fashioned IPA, with more earthy and piney flavors. Today, the hop landscape is completely different than it was just a few years ago and Flying Dog took advantage of that to redo this old favorite.

Flying Dog is the largest brewery in the state of Maryland and produced 93,330 barrels in 2015 (the last year for which numbers are available), according to the Brewers Association. It has been around for almost 25 years and attracts people’s attention with its Gonzo ties to writer Hunter S. Thompson and artist Ralph Steadman.

The Beers:

  • Summer Rental Radler: Summer Rental is the sixth beer to graduate from a Brewhouse Rarity to a standard release in their seasonal portfolio.  A light lager brewed with grapefruit and passionfruit to create this refreshing, very low (4.5%) ABV offering. Slightly sweet and slightly tart with a crisp dry finish, this beer is a perfect starting point for any holdouts who have been waiting for the right beverage to get them into craft beer. For the seasoned experts, Summer Rental is begging for the cocktail treatment. Start by adding a shot of a boldy botanical gin for a quick and delicious gin radler. 10 IBU
  • Bloodline IPA: Originally brewed for the Craft Brewers Conference in 2013, Bloodline is an IPA that is brewed with Blood Orange peel and juice. Using a variety of hops (Northern Brewer, Citra, and Galaxy) and the citrus, this is an intensely flavored beer that is designed to bring out the best of both, finding that balance between citrus sweetness and bitterness. When released, it was supposed to only be available during the conference, but now you can find it year around as part of their core lineup. 7% ABV, 40 IBU
  • Snake Dog IPA: Snake Dog is Flying Dog’s “hop monster” and with the recent reformulation is hitting more of the big citrus hop notes with Mosaic, Citra, Simcoe, Columbus, and Warrior backed by great caramel malt notes. A lot of people love to have IPAs with spicy food, but they do emphasize the spice in the food. We prefer them with creamy and fatty food – think sharp cheddar or salty ham. 7.1% ABV, 60 IBU
  • Dead Rise Summer Ale: With artwork by Ralph Steadman and with proceeds to benefit True Blue, Dead Rise was a celebration of the 75th anniversary of Old Bay that no one could do except for Flying Dog! The brewers and spice experts at Old Bay worked for six months to develop the recipe and coming in at 5.6% ABV and 25 IBU, this beer highlights the character of Old Bay while being perfect for our region’s hot summer months! Dead Rise is named after the deadrise boats that navigate the Chesapeake Bay and proceeds will be used to promote sustainably harvested Maryland Blue Crab and to reward Maryland restaurants that serve Maryland crabmeat.
