The Left Hand story is a familiar one … a homebrewing kit is given as a gift and two friends start to brew beer. They become good at it, very good at it, and decide to open a brewery. On 22 January 1994, Left Hand Brewing was opened next to the St. Vrain River in Longmont, Colorado. Their first beer was Sawtooth Ale, an award winning Amber Ale that is still one of their flagship beers. They are probably most famous for their introduction, in 2011, of Milk Stout Nitro in bottle. Left Hand is both the first American and the first craft brewery to master the science of bottling a Nitrogen beer without a widget. Two years later, they expanded the bottled Nitro series with Sawtooth Nitro and Wake Up Dead Nitro. Today, they are one of the country’s top craft brewers with dozens of Great American Beer Festival medals, 11 World Beer Cup awards, and 9 European Beer Star awards. They are committed to the people of their community, the environment, and are an employee owned/ESOP structured organization. Today, we are tasting some of their seasonal and lighter offerings!

The Beer:

  • Saison au Miel: One of their seasonal farmhouse-style ales that feature native Colorado ingredients, this one is a dry and crisp ale with mild tartness that is softened by Colorado wildflower honey. 6.8% ABV, 10 IBU
  • Travelin’ Light Kolsch: A golden, crisp, dry, and refreshing ale brewed with Pale 2-Row, Vienna, and Acidulated malt and hopped with a mix of Willamette and Mount hood for a herbal hop hit. 4.8% ABV, 22 IBU
  • Good Juju: “A little Juju voodoo – fresh ginger kisses the lithe malty body, copulating with the hop in this pale ale ancestor. Emancipate yourself from the dead of winter, none but the vernal equinox can free the light. A refreshing frivolity. Hey mon. Shuccha fwangaa! Better a witch doctor than a trouble maker. Quit yor’ bitchin’ an’ get to witchin’.” 4.5% ABV, 20 IBU
  • Extrovert American IPA: “A hoppy attitude and a mouthful of dynamic flavors give this IPA a big personality. Assertive, fruit-forward hops with aromas of orange blossom and pineapple mingle with flavors of wet pine and sweet malt with a dry finish.” Brewed with 2-row, Rye, Wheat, Caramunich III, Acidulated, and Carafoam malts and using Equinox, Comet,  and Cascade hops.  7.1% ABV, 75 IBU
