Parallel 43 is a local family-owned importer and wholesaler that specializes in wines from Eastern Europe, mainly Bulgaria – a country with a long and storied history of wine production. There wines are a great representation of what Bulgaria can do today! They combine the region’s unique opportunities (indigenous varieties, new-ish hybrids, and value-driven international varietals) with the region’s wine-making capability and traditions. They are all the products of a single winery, the Borovitza Winery, which was established in the 1960s in the northern Danubian region, but was revived by Dr. Ogi Tzvetanov in 2004. He made it his mission to find and vinify small parcels of old vines that survived the purge on alcoholism and subsequent vine-pull that happened in the Gorbachev era. Dr. Tzvetanov died in 2016 but his philosophy lives on: wines of real class and character from an undervalued former vinous powerhouse. Come out and try a selection for your summer needs today!

The Wines:

  • Adriana Srebrinova Argentum Extra Brut Sparkling: Extra Brut denotes the driest of sparkling wines with less than 6 g/liter of residual sugars, thus requiring a very minimal dosage. Dosage is the mixture of reserve wine (“shipping liquer”) and pure cane sugar that winemakers add to the finished sparkling after disgorgement to return to bottle to its correct volume. This sparkling is produced using the traditional champenois method from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to produce a wine with very pronounce minerality, slight yeastiness, and a nice freshness. Pair this with oysters or just sip it to refreshing yourself in the afternoon heat.
  • Circulus Syrah Rose: We are a huge advocates of regional diversity in rose here at the Shop – the more the better – and this is impressive stuff. A very nice Syrah rose for a very attractive price! Very bright, not tart, with a nose of red apple, strawberry, and a good touch of minerality. This is a full-bodied rose with a waxy/oily mouthfeel that is balanced by refreshing acidity and mineral notes on the finish. Pair this with fried cauliflower, pasta salad, veggie pizza, miso chicken wings, grilled fish, or any number of summer-y dishes!
  • Trianguli Bouquet 2012: Bouquet is a Bulgarian grape variety, a Mavrud and Pinot Noir cross created in 1951 at the Pleven viticulture and oenology institute in northern Bulgaria. There are only about 640 acres of it in cultivation in Bulgaria despite its potential to make serious reds from the small, thick-skinned berries. Rich aroma of red and black berries. Very fresh and fruity, succulent, with silky tannins, elegant and well-balanced finish. A nice summer red that will pair well with grilled meats.
  • Quadratus Pinot Noir 2011: A lovely 100% Pinot Noir from the Danube Plain that has spent 3 years in barrel. This wine has a nose of red and black cherry with fresh cherry on the palate. There is a touch of spice that leads into the bright, fruity finish. A great value Pinot Noir for those looking for something with a European flair. Pair with roast pork tenderloin, salmon fillets, or roasted mushrooms with herbs.bulgarian
