Tonight we welcome the wines of Ribafreixo onto the tasting bar! They are an innovative, forward thinking, ambitious and growing commerical vineyard from Alentejo, Portugal. Since 2007 South African Mário Pinheiro and Portuguese Nuno Bicó, alongside renowned winemaker Paulo Laureano, have been producing award winning red and white wines. They produce sustainable wines using 100% integrated production. Integrated production is an ‘alternative’ approach that is ‘halfway’ between traditional farming and biodynamic farming. Numerous practices in their day-to-day work are based on the core principles of integrated production: from using cutting-edge farming technology in order to avoid any impact on the ecosystem, natural resources, or components involved in natural regulation; covering crops between rows to protect and improve the soil in order to stop evaporation and thereby reduce water consumption. Drip irrigation allows us to ration precious water; restricted application of certified phytopharmaceuticals as well as citrus-based ones in order to minimise any possible impact on the soil and maximise pest control, while assuring harmlessness for humans; application of hormones to eradicate moths that affect the quality of the wine significantly if unchecked.

So all in all we are friends of the earth aiming to raise the bar as a company that combines a profitability and quality based business view, with a substantial element of sustainability focused on respect for the environment, biodiversity and the ecosystem.  In the end, the most important result reaches our winery – healthier and more wholesome grapes, a factor that weighs in decisively (at about 80%) on the quality of our wines.

The Wines:

  • Gaudio Verdelho 2016: A great expression of the Verdelho grape from Alentejo. The grapes are manually harvested and rigorously selected before a soft pressing. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel vats at a cool temperature. This is a superb aperitif or “before lunch” wine. It has hints of tropical fruits, spices, and mineral notes and is full and fresh. Excellent paired with grilled fish, as well as sushi.
  • Pato Frio Cashmere Rosé 2016: This 100% Touriga Nacional wine is an unique, elegant, and refined Rosé from Alentejo. From grapes that were picked specifically for rosé production and pressed without crushing or destremming to ensure properly controlled color extraction and to prevent unwanted bitter compounds. After a mild pressing, the mash is salmon and after fermentation, produces a wine that is particularly noticeable for its fresh and youthful nature. A fun mix of lychee and gooseberries with a touch of light red fruit, it is very smooth, with great freshness and a nice minerality. Pair with sushi or sashimi. Or, just grab a bottle and enjoy pool side!
  • Pato Frio Red Edition 2014: This red is a blend made from Aragonez (60%), Alfrocheiro (20%) and Alicante Bouschet (20%), which are three grape varieties with three different maturation cycles. They are harvested, selected, and fermented separately,  beginning with the Aragonez, followed by Alfrocheiro, and finally Alicante Bouschet. Each batch is carefully handled and partially aged in French oak barrels from Seguin Moreau, medium toast, fine grain. After the malolatic fermentation, the blend from these three grape varieties is created, followed by bottling and 8 to 10 months of aging. Richly fruity with plums, wild berries, and notes of dark chocolate, this is a quaffable, balanced wine that has a lasting and pleasant finish. Pair this with hearty meats, including those off the grill.
