The Wines:

  • Santa Julia Brut Rose NV: Okay, Julia is real. She is the only daughter of José Zuccardi, current director of Familia Zuccardi winery. The Santa Julia line of wines represents the Zuccardi Family’s commitment to achieve the highest quality levels through sustainable practices, contributing to protect the environment and to develop the community. This sparkling wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir grown in the Tupangato region of Mendoza and made with the Charmat method. It displays aromas and flavors of wild strawberries, cherries, and cranberries, and nice herbal characteristics.
  • Vinum Cellars ‘V’ Series Chenin Blanc: The 2014 vintage is the 16th year that Vinum has made Chenin Blanc from Wilson Farms in Clarksburg, CA. The thing that makes this location so special is its microclimate: a special combination of heat-prone valley floor that is cooled down in the afternoon by cool marine breezes. The grapes are harvested in the middle of the night so we receive them nice and cold at the winery bright and early (usually 5am). We hand sort the grapes and go direct to the press, expressing the juice and cold settling for about 3 days. They go into ~20% neutral French Oak barrels and barrel ferment until dry before aging in the same barrels. The rest is stainless steel fermented cold and slow to bring out the aromatic nature of Chenin Blanc. This is a vibrant, pale yellow color that has an aroma of tropical fruits like kiwi and melon with a palate balance in acidity and bright fruit: citrus, apple, fig, and others. It finishes with more tropical fruit notes. It pairs well with goat cheese and beets in a salad; grilled fish; King Salmon in béchamel; or pork chop with blood orange compote. 100% Chenin Blanc
  • Vinum Cellars ‘V’ Series Petite Sirah: Wilson Farms, where this 100% Petit Sirah is also grown, is a 3rd generation farm established in 1922 with the oldest blocks of grapes being used to make this wine having been planted in 1978. This a beast of a Petit Sirah! Deep plum/inky purple in color, it is an uber concentrated wine that is bursting with ripe blue and black fruit notes. With touches of silky vanilla and tannin, it is multidimensional and very food friendly. Are you going to be throwing a steak on the grill for Valentine’s Day? Grab this bottle! It would pair wonderfully with a wood-fired grilled rib eye served with herbed (may I suggest rosemary and sea salt) fingerling potatoes, and broccolini tossed with roasted pine nuts and Regianno. Or, this flank steak dish from the Splendid Table.
  • Tortoise Creek Zinfandel “The Chelonian”: No other variety represents the region of Lodi like Zinfandel. Over 100 years ago European settlers believed it to be the best fit for the climate and soils, and their keen insight paid off. This 100% old vine Zinfandel has a lot going for it, both in and out of the glass! Since 2009, Tortoise Creek Wines has partnered with the Chelonian Research Foundation, a non-profit organization, to donate a portion of the annual profits to benefit the conservation of turtles and tortoises. The grapes are sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards in Lodi that are Lodi Rules certified and are carefully handled in a gravity flow system through whole cluster fermentation to maximize flavor and color extraction.  Extended maceration was used to add depth, structure, complexity and to stabilize the unique color of Zinfandel. The wine is then aged in oak for 6 months to soften and add complexity in the mid-palate. With a lovely spicy, cherry nose and full of ripe berry, currant, and plum notes with a finish of cinnamon toast, this is a classic Zinfandel. Pairs well with many spicy foods but is best with game and beef.
