Bulgaria has had a tumultuous recent wine history. In the ’70s and ’80s, the Bulgarian state wine monopoly underwent a minor economic miracle: they transformed their wine industry, with any real domestic market, into a real player in Europe, with large and regular orders from the Soviet Union and the UK. They were, briefly, the second largest wine producer in the world. They did this by planting varieties they knew would sale (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer and Riesling) and trading, thanks to a deal with Pepsico, California winemaking knowledge for cola. The partial prohibition that Gorbachev put in place in 1985-87 cut the total production by nearly 75% and many vineyards were abandoned. The 1990s brought privatization and some overseas investment, with more wineries being built closer to the vineyards and today, it is winemaking style, care, and equipment that really determine whether these wines meant our expectations. Furthermore, they are working with both international and indigenous varieties to create high-quality and affordable wines in a variety of styles.

The Wines:

  • F2F Chardonnay: “Barrel aged for four months on fine lees in new French oak barrels, this wine has a complex bouquet displaying tinges of ripe apricot, dried fig and vanilla with a soft touch of honey and shortbread. Silky smooth with very nice acidity, the rich flavors from the oak are very well integrated, ending with a long and elegant finish.” 100% Chardonnay
  • Bulgariana Gamza: “Gamza is an indigenous Bulgarian varietal that is characterized by a unique softness on the palate and delicate tannins. A full-bodied wine with aromas of red fruits, freshness, and a ruby red color. This exquisite traditional Bulgarian wine is quite versatile and pairs well with steak, burgers, grilled salmon, tuna or chicken; can also be enjoyed with pizza and dishes with tomato sauce, with olives and tapas, or as a stand alone.” 100% Gamza
  • F2F Red Blend: “Aged 14 months in new French oak barrels. This wine has a beautiful and intense color. The aroma is spicy, with hints of mocha, black fruits, tobacco leaves, and dark chocolate. Very rich taste with good acidity and soft, sweet tannins. The finish is spicy and long lasting.” 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, & 10% Regent
  • Castra Rubra Motley Cock: “The color is dark ruby with soft nuances. The nose is impressively juicy with ripe red berries, cinnamon and clove, liquorice and dry meat. Fresh, juicy, well-rounded body, with ripe tannins. Elegant and spicy finish. This wine is very food friendly and can be match with wide range of dishes; Italian pasta and pizza, matured yellow cheeses, BBQ and steaks.” 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, & 20% Mavrud
