The Wines:

  • Juvé & Camps Brut Rose: Juvé & Camps is a family-owned winery located in San Sadurní d’Anoia, a small town in the northeastern Penedès region near Barcelona. Founded in 1921 by Joan Juvé Baqués and his wife Teresa Camps Farré, the winery’s three-generation history has resulted in an international reputation for producing top-quality Cava. The story of Juvé & Camps actually began over 200 years ago when Joan Juvé Mir, a bold and enterprising vine grower with ideas ahead of his time, laid the foundation for what would become the family firm. Today, Juvé & Camps has established itself as the most highly regarded Cava producer in Spain. Juvé & Camps wines are regularly served at state banquets given by Spain’s Royal Family and are offered to visitors and guests by the National Government, the Senate and Congress. This Rosé Brut is made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes that come from the Feixa 1 vineyard on the historic Juvé y Camps estate. The free run juice undergoes a cold-soak maceration followed by fermentation in stainless steel. The beautiful salmon-pink Cava is delicate on the nose with notes of strawberries, white flowers, and almonds. It is rich and creamy on the palate with a fine perlage. Pair this with salmon pâté and foie gras for a decadent Valentine’s Day feast!
  • Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis Dolcetto D’Alba 2016: This last week, the Shop was lucky to be visited by Chiara Boschis, the “Queen of Barolo,” who makes some of the best modernist Barolos available. She only makes about 5,000 cases every year from their small, scattered holdings in Barolo, which total only 32 acres. Chiara is a farmer first. They farm organically and those principles follow into the cellar.  As a winemaker, she is a master of balance, crafting finessed and sophisticated wines that are some of the most aromatically dynamic expressions of the Langhe today. In the time that she has run her estate, she has become known as a “Superwoman” in the area; she is one of the only female winemakers in the Langhe; and is no stranger to the limelight, garnering praise regularly from international publications. Additionally, she was featured in the Barolo Boys documentary from a few years ago, where she is known as the “Barolo Girl.” This is one of the most spectacular glasses of Dolcetto that I have ever had! Rich and sweet with a depth rarely seen from this grape that shows the love and care that Chiara puts in every bottle! Nothing overly fancy, just a delicious glass of wine! Pair with your antipasta, pasta, or cheese and enjoy.
  • Herencia Altés L’Estel 2015: Nuria Altés, like many young vintners in Spain, comes from a family who have grown grapes for generations. Tucked away in a remote corner of Catalunya, Herència Altés is situated outside the village of Batea, in the DO of Terra Alta. Having grown up among the vines that her grandfather tended, Nuria has known these vineyards since her childhood and made the decision in 2010 to start purchasing grapes from her father to make her own personal wines. In this project she is assisted by her partner Rafael de Haan and together they inaugurated a new cellar for the 2016 vintage located in her hometown of Batea. Since 2010, Rafa and Nuria have slowly grown their property from 14 to 60 hectares. They purchased their first vineyard, La Serra in 2013 followed by Lo Grau and Xalamera in 2014 and 2015. They are certified organic (CCPAE) and practicing organic (on their contract vineyards). L’Estel is a summation of the varieties and terroirs of Terra Alta. By blending several varieties (50% Carinyena, 25% Garnatxa Negra, & 25% Syrah) and old-vine sources (both estate fruit and vineyards she farms for her neighbors ranging from 40 to 100 years old) Nuria Altés is able to create a serious wine with aging potential that is also charming in its youth. Stony minerality with fresh berry fruit and toasty notes enrich the structure and natural complexity provided by the old vines. Enjoy this on Valentine’s Day with any grilled meat that will make your loved one’s heart sing!
  • Cousiño-Macul Dama De Plata 2015: We recently were lucky enough to be visited by Veronica Cousiño, the first women to be involved with and the seventh generation in her family’s winemaking fortunes, which were founded by the Dama De Plata (aka Silver Lady), Isidora Goyenechea, for whom this wine was named. This is a single vineyard wine from a a specific vineyard in Buin, specially managed and dedicated to the best Cabernet Sauvignon (85%). The Malbec (10%) and Syrah (5%) come from small blocks of varieties within the same vineyard. After manual harvest and a strict selection inside the cellar, the grapes undergo a low temperature maceration before fermentation. It is aged in 100% French Oak barrels for 12 months. This is a complex and fun wine with a fruity character and elegant tannins. A great pairing for your Valentine’s dinner of filet mignon, Beef Wellington, or a hearty lasagna.
