Wonderful Canned Wines with Jenalyn @ CCWS | Arlington | Virginia | United States

Francis Ford Coppola’s Sofia Sparkling Wine came out in it’s little pink can over a decade ago as one of the first canned wines, and it was lauded for it novelty! Today, canned wines are enthusiastically embraced by wine drinkers everywhere for their portability, sustainability, and innovation in delivering their favorite beverage in new locations. Between 2016 and 2017, the sales of canned wines have jumped from $6.4 million to $14.5 million, a whopping 125 percent surge.

“Providing this level of portability with just the right amount of wine makes it easy for today’s active consumer to enjoy their favorite beverage anywhere,” confirms Sherrie Rosenblatt, vice president of marketing and communications for CMI, the Can Manufacturers Institute. They are lightweight and infinitely recycleable. Cans are perfect for any outdoor occasion. No glass. They require no corkscrew. Perfect for the beach, the park, the boat, the pool, the golf course, camping, at a BBQ, and anywhere else that glass poses an issue.

Featured Cans:

  • Tiamo Organic White: This 100% Grillo comes from organically farmed vineyard on the southern Italian island of Sicily. The region is ideally suited for the Grillo grape with soils that are high in limestone and sand and vines located on hillsides with good exposure to the sun. After gentle pressing of the grapes and clarification of the must, fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel vats for 15 days after which the wine is carefully stored until ready for canning in the early spring. No oak. The wine has a lovely bright crispness to it but also charming fresh fruit flavors of apricots and peaches. Perfect to drink as an aperitif or with seafood, pasta or cheese.
  • Amble + Chase Rosé: The name AMBLE + CHASE pays homage to the winemaking process. During the long growing season, the winemaker will “amble” through the vineyard, watching over the vines and ensuring the highest quality fruit, which is followed by the “chase” when the grapes are ready to be harvested. The terroir is mostly on clay-limestone and sandy sedimentary grounds. To the north, the climate is of continental influence, tempered by the Durance river, in the south the influence is more Mediterranean. The grapes undergo cold maceration for 24 hours to extract color and flavor from the skins.  This is followed by fermination in stainless tanks for 12 days. A blend of 40% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 30% Cinsault, AMBLE + CHASE Rosé 2017 is pale salmon pink in color and shows complex aromas of cherry blossom and white raspberry, giving way to notes of juicy peach and ripe red grapefruit on the palate. The wine has a persistent freshness and salty minerality thanks to the vines’ southern exposure and cooling breezes from the Mediterranean. Perfect pairing for goat cheese, seafood, and Pan-Asian dishes.
  • Tangent Rosé: This is a single vineyard rose from the historic Paragon Vineyard in Edna Valley, originally planted in 1973, with the Pacific Ocean lying only five miles to the west and with one of the longest growing seasons in the state. Tangent and the Niven family are constantly innovating and thinking outside the box. This Rosé represents a modern avant-garde approach to the category! They turned the traditional rosé recipe upside down by utilizing their unique cool climate Albariño and Viognier to build the base of crisp, clean, elegant, and vibrant fruit. From there the Pinot Noir, Grenache, and Syrah brings in the bright strawberry and watermelon flavors. This great single-vineyard blend is a wonderful can to split with friends. The Niven family’s estate has earned the Sustainability in Practice (SIP) Vineyard Certification.
  • Tiamo Organic Red: This blend of Montepulciano, Nero d’Avola and Syrah comes from organically farmed vineyards in coastal Italian regions of Abruzzo and Sicily. Tiamo searches far and wide for top vineyards in notable Italian regions, allowing them to produce wines with unique character and style true to their origin. This blend is lush with soft tannins, as well as rich aromas and flavors of red berries. Perfect for all types of BBQ and grilled fish or seafood. Try it Chilled!
